Installing MAGpie 2 - The Order of Operations

All of these components are available from ncam.org's website; we've created this site to walk you through the process - you must strictly adhere to the process. MAGpie will not work if things are installed out of order. NCAM also provides instructions.

It is a four step process and this is the order:
  1. Install Java
  2. Install QuickTime Pro
  3. Install Oratrix Grins player (for windows only - needed if your video is non-QuickTime)
  4. Install MAGpie 2.01

1. Download and install the correct version of Java

v.1.3.1_08 JRE

""

2. Download and install QuickTime Pro.

Follow the next steps to properly perform a custom installation that will include all the components needed by MAGpie.

Apple's QuickTime Download Page

3. Choose "Custom" installation

QuickTime Installation Window

4. Check the "QuickTime for Java" option (or click the select all button) and finish the installation.

QuickTime Installation Window

5. You have installed the "non-pro" version of QuickTime. To upgrade to the pro version:

  • Open QuickTime

  • Go under the Edit tab

  • Choose Preferences

  • Select Registration

Then click "Register Online"

QuickTime Player

6. Choose windows or mac, and proceed to check out (it will cost $25).

This is also available from the Wisc. Catalogue

When you've finished the process, you will have a registration number e-mailed to you.

QuickTime Pro Web Site

7. In the QuickTime Player, go back to
Edit-->Preferences-->Edit Registration

Choose Edit Registration and enter your number.

QuickTime Player

8. Download Oratrix GRINS Player - this allows you to use windows media and real video as your source video.

Get this from ncam.org's download page.

NCAM Web Site

9. Run the GRINS installer and make sure it is installed in the same location as your Java files. The location is likely to be:

C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1_08\lib\ext

The GRINS installer may default to this location, but it's a good idea to double-check.

10. Download the MAGpie 2.01 installer.

You will have the option to open the file or to save the file. It is a good idea to save the file to your hard drive and open it from there. This prevents you from having to re-download the file if you need to re-install it.

NCAM's Web Site

11. Windows Users will see a folder called "Mag2Inst-win". This is a zip file, so unzip the file and run the setup.exe file.

OSX users will need to run Mag2Inst-osx

You are now ready to caption.

Start by creating a transcript.
