Adding Timecode Instructions

This is MAGpie's core function. The timecode entered here will be embedded into the files that will later be associated with QuickTime, Windows Media, or RealPlayer. These files will contain the captions, and will use the timecode to control when each caption is displayed.

1. Your focus will now be on the Start Time Column.

2. Place your cursor in the first row of the first column and press F9.

Pressing F9 will enter the timecode 0:00:00.00 – this is zero hours: zero minutes: zero seconds: zero frames.

3. Click Play (you can also press F6 to play and pause)

  • blue plays back at slow speed

  • green plays back at normal speed

  • red plays back at faster speed

Be ready to press F9. Pressing F9 will instert timecode markers in real-time as the video plays.

4. Press F9 after you hear the last word of the fist caption. In this example, the first caption will be displayed from 0:00:00.00 to 0:00:09.43

Notice that the cursor has automatically advanced to the next row. From now until the end of your video, you will only need to press F9. The trick is to do it at the right time and to stay on track.

5. The End Time column is not used. Each caption's end time is simply the Start Time in the next row.

The red area's on screen lifetime is controlled by the two Start Time instructions. This is somewhat counter-intuitive, but makes for very fast and easy captioning if you are able to press F9 at the pace of the dialogue.
