Learning Objective: This illustrated audio presentation features Joyce Carey, a former UW Madison Professor of textile design. Joyce describes how she approaches the design process and discusses the inspirational sources for many of her popular works. This presentation is used in introductory textile design courses and also has been used by the artist to accompany her public exhibits. Joyce wrote and narrated the presentation. She illuminates the artistic process behind her work and provides learners with an inside glimpse of how an expert practitioner approaches the craft of textile design.

Comments: The illustrated audio format is well suited for this type of presentation. Since motion is not a critical component of the content, static slides with narration and music convey the essential concepts without the need for an expensive and time consuming video production.

Pedagogical Considerations

The emphasis is to provide students with exposure to an expert practitioner. Often students are not explained how an expert approaches a creative and complex task. This presentation is intended to inspire beginning textile designers by providing insight into the design process.
