In the previous section we discussed the challenge of squeezing huge media files though the internet’s limited and often narrow bandwidth. Audio and video files in their raw uncompressed form are so huge that they could literally clog up a network. So to stream these media files on the internet we need to first reduce their size and bandwidth requirements. In this section we’ll look at how large media files are made smaller and how they’re encoded for streaming across the web.
