Part 8: Using Streaming Servers

previous slide next slide Slide 2 of 8

A streaming server consists of both hardware and software. It includes a computer that contains media files and is connected to a network. This computer also houses some very specialized software that manages the process of delivering media files over the internet. Streaming servers give you a greater level of control over your media delivery but can be more complicated to set up and administer than a standard web server. Although you can simulate streaming by placing media files on a standard web server, this is not the most reliable approach for delivering lengthy media clips to large numbers of users. Streaming servers are also required if your content consists of synchronized multimedia slide shows.
